Moving houses is no easy feat, especially if the whole family is moving from one residence into a brand-new home. On the bright side, it is a clean slate and a new beginning that forces you to re-evaluate the things you own and have a big spring clean. To make moving day as easy and as enjoyable (dare we say it) as possible, we have some handy tips that’ll shorten the labour and simultaneously help you put things in place much quicker than you’d anticipated.
Give Yourself A Timeline & Make A Checklist
The worst thing that could happen on moving day is that the removalist’s truck shows up and you’re completely unprepared. Moving into a new home makes you very busy in a short period of time and occupies your mind with the many things that need to be done. To avoid forgetting things or getting overwhelmed with the process, make a timeline and a checklist to go with it. You’ll then be able to tick off the things that need to be done two weeks before, a week before, two days before and so on. Make the list as extensive as you need to. The more detailed, the smoother your moving day will be.
Sell Items Weeks In Advance
If you plan on selling furniture, appliances or any other bulky household items, publish your ads weeks in advance. There’s no telling that someone will want to purchase your items on the week you need get rid of them, so give your ads time to get exposure for as long as possible. If you need the items up till the day you move out, like a fridge, you can still put the ad out and let buyers know that it will be available for pick up on a specific date.
Donate Clothes That You Don’t Wear Anymore
We all have a “just in case” stack of clothes. The “just in case I need old clothes to paint in” or “just in case I have a dress up party” items. The truth is, if it hasn’t seen the light of day since last season then it’s time to part ways. If you don’t give some clothes up from a wardrobe that collects dust, you’re going to make it much harder for yourself to settle into your new place and struggle to utilise storage space. The best way to decide which clothes will make the cut into your new wardrobe is by packing your favourite items and the ones you wear every day first. From there, it’s a process of elimination. Create a pile of clothes that are still in good condition to donate to goodwill and another pile that need to be thrown away. A good tip to avoid wastage is to use old clothes as rags to clean surfaces of the property you’re vacating.
The biggest no-no on moving day is stressing. You don’t want to be drowning in one hundred boxes hoping to be completely unpacked all in one day. Unless you have an army of helpers, it won’t happen. So, be prepared to give yourself some time to settle in. You’ll actually enjoy moving day if you let yourself get excited about the prospect of living in a new home – and if you built with New Edge Homes, you’ve got a lot to look forward to!
